Tesla ramps up electric car production in China

Tesla significantly increased deliveries of its electric cars produced in China in May after a surprising decline in April. According to figures from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), Tesla delivered 33,463 Model 3 and Model Y from the Gigafactory in Shanghai in May.

BYD has published its sales figures for May 2021. The share of electrified vehicles rose to 71 per cent – mainly due to the strong growth in hybrids. In addition, the first 100 electric Tang EVs were shipped to Norway.

CATL marks strong battery sales start to 2021

CATL has overtaken LG Energy Solution as the top supplier of battery cells for new electric cars in the first quarter of 2021, according to newly released statistics. CATL sold battery cells with a total capacity of 13.3 GWh in the first three months of the year.

LG & SKI show increased battery sales for Q1 2021

Increasing battery sales are reflected in the balance sheets of the Korean battery cell manufacturers LG Energy Solution and SK Innovation. In the first quarter of 2021, both groups posted a year-on-year increase in sales of 88 and 80 per cent, respectively.

Norway sold 8,498 new BEVs in May

In Norway, 8,498 new electric cars were registered in May. The share of electric cars in new passenger car registrations was 60.4 per cent last month. Norway’s most successful model across all drive types in May was the Ford Mustang Mach-E with 1,384 new registrations.

7,229 new electric passenger cars were registered in Norway in April, up 96.9 per cent compared to the same month in the last Covid-year. Norway’s most successful model across all drive types in April was the VW ID.4 with 1,824 buyers.

BYD makes millions in profit in Q1 of 2021

BYD achieved sales of around 41 billion yuan (approx. 5.1 billion euros) in the first quarter of 2021, slightly more than twice as much (+108 per cent) as in the same quarter of the previous year. Profit rose even more, although mainly because of one-off effects.

CAM study finds PHEV sales rose in Europe over Q1

An analysis by the Center of Automotive Management (CAM) found that new registrations of BEVs and PHEVs increased strongly in Europe and China in the first quarter of 2021. China remains the largest electric market, just ahead of Europe. What is striking is the enormous increase in new PHEV registrations in Europe.

China shows strong EV sales growth over Q1 2021

The first EV manufacturers from China published their sales figures for March and for the first quarter of the year. Unsurprisingly, the statistics from BYD, Nio and Xpeng show a strong increase in sales compared to the start of 2020, which was overshadowed by the beginning of the pandemic.

Mercedes-Benz Cars sold 59,000 electrified cars in Q1 2021

Daimler subsidiary Mercedes-Benz Cars sold around 59,000 electrified cars worldwide in Q1/2021, including more than 16,000 fully electric passenger cars. This corresponded to a share of around ten per cent of total sales; in Europe, the share of electric cars and plug-in hybrids in sales even exceeded 25 per cent.

Around 97,000 electric cars and plug-in hybrids were sold in China in February, according to figures from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), 675 per cent more than in the same month last year but 37.9 per cent fewer than in January 2021. However, some manufacturers were also up in February.

PSA sold 120,000 electrified models throughout 2020

The PSA Group recorded around 120,000 new registrations for electrified models in 2020, one reason it met the European CO2 targets. At the same time, the French company’s total sales slumped 27.8% to 2.51 million cars in the crisis year compared to 2019.

German carmakers increase electric car sales

German carmakers Porsche, Audi, VW and the BMW Group, have published sales figures for 2020. Although overall sales declined, their sales of electric cars and plug-in hybrids still saw a significant increase. In some cases, these now account for a double-digit share of total sales.
