Dieter-Zetsche“Whoever arrives too early is alone on the dance floor. Whoever comes too late may have already missed the best part.”

For Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche, the time to launch an EV has to be picked as carefully as the time to arrive at a party. He says that launching the Generation EQ concept at the end of the decade is the right time to so.

Trevor-Milton“We’ve essentially solved the biggest transportation problem in our history.”

Trevor Milton, CEO of Nikola Motors, seems to be ready to take Elon Musk head on – at least in terms of communication. The company just revealed its hydrogen-electric truck, said to launch in 2020.

Jens-Marquardt“It’s important for Formula E to keep its USP with racing in big cities where the people are.”

BMW motorsport director Jens Marquardt doesn’t believe that the Formula E needs to go any faster, but should focus on fan interaction and virtual racing. He even believes that one day, fans could virtually race against the teams actually on the track.

Jens Marquardt, Jochem Heizmann, Ronald Baron.

Jens-Marquardt“We have now increased our plug-in hybrids quite substantially in our overall portfolio, but for us something like LMP would have to be a major step in technology to really communicate it.”

BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt rules out a BMW entry in the WEC LMP series at the current state of regulation. But participation in the endurance races would look more feasible once fuel cell technology becomes part of the game.

Jochem-Heinzmann“We appreciate every step to liberalise Chinese regulations and the Chinese economy in a way that meets international standards.”

Volkswagen’s CEO for China, Jochem Heizmann would like to see China remove caps on the stakes foreign automakers can have in JVs as early as possible. VW makes 40 percent of its business in China. Chinese carmakers remain opposed.

Ron-Baron“If you’re investing in a Musk business, you’re investing in something that hasn’t happened yet, so it’s risky. But I love the guy. He’s totally focused. He’s already accomplished what people said could never be done.”

Ronald Baron, founder of Baron Capital, has full trust in the Musk. And an interest too as Baron owns 1.5 million Tesla shares. It will be the shareholders who will ultimately decide if the SolarCity merger goes through.

Jochem Heizmann, Jens Marquardt.

Jochem-Heinzmann“I think we should be aware that plug-in hybrid power is the best solution in the short and medium term. Perhaps the development of all-electric vehicles can be realized in the long run. Discussions are ongoing in this respect also with Chinese experts.”

Jochem Heizmann, VWs board member responsible for China, sees PHEV as the short-term solution and claims missing charging infrastructure and standardisation in China as the main reason.

Jens-Marquardt“The reason is that changing cars after twenty minutes of racing because of a flat battery doesn’t reflect the endurance of our vehicles. Therefore it’s important that the series develops, which already has been structured in a roadmap. We are following it closely.”

BMW’s Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt explains why the company is not part of the Formula E racing series – yet.
