Nio starts series production of second ES6 model

The Chinese electric car startup Nio has started series production of its second ES6 model. Both series, the ES6 and the ES8, are currently manufactured at the Nio-JAC plant in Hefei. After Nio’s plans for a factory in Shanghai were abandoned, plans are now being made for a factory in Beijing.

The German manufacturer SGL Carbon and the Chinese electric car manufacturer Nio have developed a prototype of a battery housing made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) for electric vehicles. It is around 40% lighter than comparable aluminum housings.

PSA to launch 3 EVs until 2020: The French group has revealed details about its electrification strategy in the upcoming years. By 2019, PSA intends to launch all-electric versions of its best-selling model, the Peugeot 208, and of its upcoming DS 3 Crossback. An EV version of the Peugeot 2008 shall follow in 2020. To gain a stronger position in the PHEV market, PSA plans to introduce hybrid versions of the DS 7 Crossback, the Peugeot 3008 and 5008, the Citroen C5 Aircross and Opel’s respectively Vauxhall’s Grandland X, too. The first PHEV compact crossover built on the company’s EMP2 platform will be the above mentioned DS 7 Crossback in 2019.

Tesla stops Model S 75 sales: Since yesterday, the cheapest option of the Model S is not available anymore – most probably to further distinguish the luxury sedan from the new Model 3. From now on, the Model S base version will no longer be a rear-wheel drive, but an all-wheel drive model with 75 or 100 kWh battery pack and pricing starting at 74,500 dollars (before 69,500 USD). Thus, the Model 3 is going to be the only EV in Tesla’s line-up with a rear-wheel drive motor.

Tech data about Nio’s electric SUV: When start-up Nio presented its electric SUV ES8 in April, technical specifications were not provided. Now CarNewsChina publishes data gained through a leaked spec sheet: Thus, the seven-seater comes with a total output of 240 kW and 420 Nm torque, a 67 kWh battery pack shall enable a NEFZ range of 355 km. Production kick-off is scheduled for late-2017.

Innogy’s investment plans: German RWE subsidy Innogy publishes details about its company strategy until 2025. Among others, it intends to put 1,2bn euros in the growing markets of electric mobility, photovoltaics and broadband until 2019. Quotas work wonders: China got VW to hurry its electrification and seems to have the upper hand with the upcoming tougher quotas. Volkswagen now wants to make an electric car for the masses together with JAC no later than 2018 – two years before EVs sitting on the MEB platform are scheduled. The JV’s first EV will be under a new brand name. In China, VW also hopes to deploy its new energy vehicles to ride-sharing partner Didi but the groups overall sales strategy for its largest market speaks of 400,000 PEV by 2020 and 1.5m electrified cars by 2025.

Nio likes it big: The young brand hits the floor in Shanghai with its electric SUV ES8 that can take seven passengers. Performance data is sparse but Nio equipped its EV with two electric motors and wants a swappable battery pack. A production version is to be shown before the year’s end with on-sale starting soon after. Furthermore, Nio has opened the order books for what it calls its flagship supercar. The EP9 however, will only be made ten times for a price of about 1.5m dollars each.

Citroën crossover PHEV: The C5 Aircross that has been revealed in China will be Citroen’s first plug-in hybrid model and shall launch this autumn first in China and then in Europe by 2018. The PHEV couples two electric motors with a petrol-engine to 300 hp and an electric range of 60 km.

The Kreisel EVEX 910e goes above 300 kph, accelerates from 0 to 100 kph in 2.5 seconds and is even street legal and available in a limited edition. The super cars 53 kWh power pack allows supposedly a range of 350 km. The electric Porsche will debut at the Techno Classica. Price point: 1m euros.

Ford’s electrification strategy for China: Until 2025 Ford intends to electrify 70 percent of its line-up in the world’s biggest car market. The Mondeo PHEV which will be produced in China with joint venture partner Changan will be the starting point in 2018. Within the next 5 years an all-electric sport-utility with 450 km range shall follow (also in North America and Europe). Furthermore, Ford wants to start the production lines for electric drive systems in China by 2020.

Nio and Changan united: In Nio (formerly Next EV) Changan has found another JV partner willing to manufacture EVs in China. Under the name of Yangtze River Automobile New Energy Industry Development, both companies seek to start production in Wuhan. Cash injection for Lucid Motors: EV start-up Lucid Motors seeks to fundraise 700m USD for its projected plant in Arizona. The factory shall be completed in three phases with production start scheduled for 2019. eBus based on tram design: Alstom and NTL presented a prototype of the Aptis electric bus. Its design borrows from streetcars with equipment including a pantograph for charging mounted on the roof.
