Nitin Gadkari, Daniele Schillaci.

“We should move towards alternative fuel. I am going to do this, whether you like it or not. And I am not going to ask you. I will bulldoze it.”

Nitin Gadkari, India’s minister for transport, could hardly make himself any clearer when addressing the country’s car industry. India wants to allow only EVs from 2030.

“We might have a crossover EV shortly in the future.”

This is Daniele Schillaci, Nissan’s head global sales and marketing, giving a hopeful outlook for an expansion of the carmaker’s electric offering. This includes the “e-Power” hybrid system following strong sales of the e-Note in Japan.

EU Commission, Nitin Gadkari.

European-Flag“The Commission will speed up analytical work on design options for standards for heavy duty vehicles and will launch a public consultation to prepare the ground for a legislative proposal.”

This is from a EU Commission document recovered by Reuters, that outlines limits on CO2 emissions from trucks for the first time. The draft also includes new fuel efficiency standards for cars and vans from 2020.

Nitin-Gadkari“He proposed to the Tesla senior executives to make India their Asia manufacturing hub and offered land near major Indian ports to facilitate export of their vehicles to South and South East Asian countries.”

This is the reasoning behind a recent visit of India’s minister for transport, Nitin Gadkari, at Tesla’s factory in Fremont. If he managed to convince the Californians to start manufacturing in India remains to be seen.

Chris Urmson, Michiel Langezaal, Nitin Gadkari.

Chris-Urmson“We don’t particularly want to become a car maker.”

Google’s Chris Urmson is responsible for the autonomous vehicle project of the internet giant which does not want to become vehicle manufacturer but is looking for partners to bring its self-driving cars to the market within the next five years.

Michiel-Langezaal“It’s like a flow pipe. At the beginning your pumping in stuff and at some point it starts flowing out the other side. I think things are beginning to flow.”

Fastned CEO Michiel Langezaal believes that EV uptake will accelerate significantly once the tipping point is reached. While the Netherland’s goal of 200,000 EVs by 2020 might be hard to reach, EV numbers could go up rapidly to 8 million beyond 2020.

Nitin-Gadkari“Several state transport corporations running diesel buses are making huge losses. In association with the heavy industries ministry, we have prepared a proposal to introduce electric buses. Once we approve this, we will approach urban development minister Venkaiah Naidu.”

Apparently the Indian government is pondering the introduction of electric buses. However, plans of the minister of traffic Nitin Gadkari are still in the early stages.
