“I thought it was crazy. At that time, production capacity of this Gigafactory would exceed total production of the industry. Not Panasonic. Not Japanese companies. All Japanese, Korean, and Chinese companies combined. I thought it was a crazy idea.”
Panasonic executive Yoshi Yamada admits that he didn’t really believe in the Gigafactory at first. Now he is a true believer of Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s vision for the future.
“Subsidies can’t make drivers love EVs.”
NextEV chairman William Li criticises the Chinese government for pouring too much money into the productions of and subsidies for electric cars. It may push the number of EVs on the road, but only poorly made ones and only as long as funding remains.
“My contention is that we will reach a point where it simply makes more sense from a design/ engineering/ production standpoint to do electric vehicles rather than combustion vehicles.”
Lawrence Burns, former vice president of research & development and planning for General Motors says that things like CAFE and ZEV credits help to motivate carmakers to go electric or fuel cell, but that in the end, it will just become the best way to make light-duty vehicles because “it’s simpler.”
