“Land Rover is also well prepared to make battery-electric vehicles.”
Jaguar Land Rover CEO Ralf Speth says that while Land Rover may have some disadvantages such as a higher starting weight of SUVs, there is also more room for battery packs. So both brands will have their place on the EV market.
“The employees expect that the company doesn’t just expand (its plant in) Kamenz for battery production but that capacities for batteries are also created in Untertuerkheim.”
Wolfgang Nieke, works council chief at Mercedes-Benz’s Untertuerkheim plant, says the latter could be hit hardest in terms of job cuts due to a shift to electric cars. It should therefore move away from delivering i.e. transmissions to batteries and electric drivetrains.
“In the long-term we need competition, but we are willing to build enough cars to demonstrate what’s possible if it helps raise the profile of EVs in the sport.”
VW’s head of motorsport Wolfgang Durheimer confirmed the German carmaker is working on all-electric rallycross cars to show the technology can work. The goal is to develop a championship for the latter, and even a one-make competition to show off the technology.
