“Two years ago, I was asked by customers whether a modern, optimized gasoline engine with a 48-volt hybrid drive could replace the diesel? I said, maybe. Today, I think there is really potential for the diesel to be replaced by 48-volt gasoline hybrid solutions in the future.”
Schaeffler Chief Technology Officer Peter Gutzmer believes that 48-volt hybrids, such as the one developed by Schaeffler and Continental, will replace gas-guzzling systems. Mainly because fleets need to comply with ever tighter CO2 standards.
“There was an emphasis in making the car special rather than stand out as weird. We need it to work for more than just the die-hard EV fans.”
Stuart Norris, the Chevrolet Bolt’s South Korea-based design director, believes it’s important for consumers to see the Bot not just as a game changer, but as a regular car. Because many people will not choose the car because it has zero emission, but because it is fun to drive.
