“All-electric and plug-in hybrid cars will not be restrained by a lack of battery. They will be restrained by a lack of recharging stations. The consumer’s range anxiety will shift to recharging-station anxiety.”

Subhash Dhar, CEO of North American battery company XALT Energy, expects battery production costs to sink and solid-state batteries to come, but considers the inadequate charging network to be the real Achilles’ heel that inhibits EV’s mass-market acceptance.

“As soon as Mercedes starts a car, we’ll look at what we can do.”

Mercedes-AMG prepares to develop performance versions of upcoming Mercedes’ EVs. Drummond Jacoy, Mercedes-AMG director of vehicle development, is aware that in order to do so, his Daimler subsidiary has to reinvent itself, “because the sound of a V8 is not going to be there if it’s a pure-electric vehicle. (…) we’re going to have to look at what the AMG story is with an electric vehicle.”
