Charge gauge: Germany’s national metrology institute Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) is working on measuring electricity exactly and wants to present its pre-series gauge for EV charging stations before August’s end. The system captures and stores all communication between the EV and the charging station, including charge time and the amount of electricity, so the process becomes most transparent. The in-cable device shall be finalised by the end of 2018.

Hybrid airplane: German Aerospace Centre (DLR) and NASA have named a team of TU Munich as national winners of their challenge to design the aircraft of the future. The students’ ‘Urban Liner’ aims for the reduction of fuel and pollutants as much as noise emissions. The low noise design incorporates a so-called turbo-electric distribution propulsion (TeFD), or single TF engine supported by six electric fans.

Lithium found in supervolcanoes: Scientists from Stanford Uni have pointed out a new method for finding lithium in supervolcanic lake deposits. Rainfall and hot springs leach out lithium from the volcanic deposits over tens of thousands of years before the lithium first accumulates and is finally concentrated in a clay called hectorite.

Pyrotechnic battery safety: Tesla fas filed two new patents for a pyrotechnic disconnect device. It shall help to prevent electric arcs that can occur when large currents are interrupted. The device could be used in EV batteries or stationary energy storage that may need to be disconnected quickly.
