VDL Bus & Coach has received a new order for 143 Citea buses from public transport operator RET in Rotterdam, including 103 Citea SLE-120 Hybrid buses. It is a follow up to an order of 55 Citea Electric buses they had already agreed on a few months ago.

Said all-electric buses will be used on shorter city lines in Rotterdam, Schiedam and Vlaardingen beginning in 2019. The newly ordered hybrid buses are intended for use on longer regional routes though, according to operator RET. The other 40 Citea LLE-120 buses included in the new order are diesel buses.

VDL Bus & Coach have been advancing electric mobility in their home country before. For example, they delivered no less than 100 electric bendy buses to Amsterdam. There they operate 24/7 on six routes to and from Schiphol Airport reportedly. The buses of type Citea also run in Groningen.

The Netherlands wants to ensure the end of diesel buses. From 2025 onwards, only electric buses shall be acquired to be used in public transport. RET in Rotterdam is no exception: the operator has a ten-year strategy and, according to the current order, plans to purchase 50 more electric buses in 2021 and 2024 and 110 more in 2029.
