ADS-TEC is making 3.2 MW mobile charging trailers

Battery storage specialist ADS-TEC Energy has just presented the Mobile High Power Charger, which it claims is the world’s most powerful mobile rapid charging system in the form of a truck trailer. Ten electric vehicles can simultaneously charge up to 320 kW each at the HPC charging truck.

The truck has a total output of 3.2 MW when charging at all charging points simultaneously at full power. This corresponds to the average output of about 3,200 single-family homes.

The electricity is stored in the trailer in a battery with an energy content of two-megawatt hours. The battery on the trailer itself can then be recharged more slowly via the grid. “Considering the availability of often only limited grid connections, it is a unique opportunity to provide high charging capacities for a limited period of time and in a locally flexible manner,” the company said in a press release. The mobile fast-charging system is currently in use at various events throughout Europe. It was first put into operation in Barcelona at the end of 2019.

According to Thomas Speidel, managing partner of ADS-TEC, the realisation of the project from idea to commissioning only took a year. The tractor unit and trailer were optimised so that transport could be carried out without heavy loads and within the scope of the 40-tonne total weight regulation. Speidel, who is also President of the German Energy Storage Association (BVES), emphasises: “It was already an extraordinary and enormous challenge to accommodate this energy and power on a standard truck format while maintaining the permissible total weight.

ADS-TEC has been active for some time in the field of storage-based fast charging systems in order to be able to provide high charging capacities in a decentralised and mobile manner.

ADS-TEC Energy GmbH is part of the ADS-TEC Group and has been able to build on a Bosch investment since October 2018. The German family business has its headquarters in Nürtingen near Stuttgart and a production site near Dresden. The company emphasises that all components except the cells are manufactured in-house.

Hi, do you have anyone in the UK I can talk to about mobile fast charging for use at events here? If not, do you have any information on what it would take for us to rent this solution from you on a daily basis?
