The West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) has secured three sites along major routes to set up DC charging hubs. Each will feature 20 chargers once completed.

The upcoming charging hub on Chester Road in Erdington, Birmingham, has already received outline planning permission. The other two sites are planned on Bristol Road South in Longbridge, Birmingham, and on Coventry Road in Sheldon near the airport. All three sites will be operational next year

The hubs is in part funded by the region’s £1.3 billion City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS) from the UK government. Other funds come from the private sector. Moreover, landowners can apply to house EV charging hubs on the WMCA website.

There is no technical information available on the EV chargers to be installed. The WMCA only states that EV drivers “will be able to power their vehicles with 100 miles or range in less than 15 minutes.” The locations will be covered, well-lit, and offer amenities such as stores or coffee shops, the WMCA further outlines.

“Delivering more ultra-fast charging stations is essential if we are to get more electric vehicles on our roads,” said Richard Parker, Mayor of the West Midlands. “These stations will give drivers and businesses 24/7 access to fast, reliable charging and the confidence to make the switch to electric vehicles. They will keep the West Midlands moving toward a cleaner, greener future where sustainable travel is practical, affordable, and accessible to everyone.”
