Ford to release NASCAR variant of the Mustang Mach-E

NASCAR is a popular racing series in the USA - with large V8 engines. Ford has now unveiled a new Nascar prototype that is unlikely to meet with much favour among die-hard NASCAR fans, because the Mustang Mach-E NASCAR Prototype is electric.

The technical data is quite impressive. The prototype has three engines that can deliver a total output of up to 1,014 kW. The chassis, brakes, steering and wheels come from the current Cup Series racing car. In other words, these are actually good prerequisites for going down well with the horsepower-hungry public. However, the prototype that Ford presented for the NASCAR series is purely electric.

In recent years, Ford Performance has repeatedly caused a stir with electric concept cars, such as the SuperVan or the Super Cobra Jet 1800 for acceleration races. This time, however, Ford has chosen a completely different segment with the NASCAR series, which is almost sacred in the south of the USA. The smallest changes to the vehicles are hotly debated there and the big V8 engine is untouchable.

Realistically, the chances of the Mustang Mach-E taking part in a NASCAR race are more than slim. The battery of the prototype is 78 kWh, which should be enough for a few laps in show events, but not for the up to 200-mile-long races of the NASCAR series, even with charging stops. However, last year, NASCAR did start exploring electric mobility, even going so far as to announce a partnership with ABB. Whether and when this partnership will bear fruit is entirely unclear at the moment, however.

In fact, no racing is planned, just a few demo drives.”Part of it is to learn about the technology in a certain motorsports discipline, but also to put that technology in front of the fans and potential customers in that form of motorsport to also gauge their reaction and similarly bring them along for that journey,” Mark Rushbrook, Global Director of Ford Performance, told the publication motorsport.
