ME Energy secures investment from India

The German startup ME Energy, which specialises in off-grid fast-charging stations, is off to a new start. The company had to file for insolvency last year and has now been fully acquired by Indian investor Trinity Cleantech.

The startup has developed the so-called ‘Rapid Charger 150,’ a, as the name suggests, 150 kW mobile fast-charger that does not need to be connected to the grid. It can store up to 4.000 kWh of energy and charge up to two electric vehicles at the same time.

The reason the charger itself does not need to be plugged in is that it produces its own energy using liquid bioethanol, which is obtained from plant residues. “It means that the source product does not compete with food production, but instead enables an effective circular economy by utilising organic waste to produce energy,” the company states on its website.

The first pilot station was installed in Germany in 2020. Now, ME Energy lists the Berlin public transport operator BVG, Sixt, DPD, BASF and the state of Brandenburg, among others, as references that use the Rapid Charger 150 mobile fast charger.

Nevertheless, the company had to file for insolvency last year – but has now found a new strategic investor: Trinity Cleantech from India has acquired the German startup. “With the Indian company Trinity Cleantech Private Limited as a new investor, ME Energy is well positioned for the future and ready to further expand its innovative charging infrastructure on an international level,” the latter states in its press release.

Under the ‘ThunderPlus’ brand, Trinity Cleantech already offers EV charging solutions for “different areas of use.” Generally speaking, off-grid solutions are interesting for the growing EV market in India. Just last year, MG presented what it said was India’s first-ever off-grid, solar-EV charging station powered by repurposed MG EV batteries.
