Xpeng enters Indonesia with locally assembled EVs

Xpeng has officially entered the Indonesian market, expanding its presence in the ASEAN region. The Chinese automaker plans to offer locally assembled electric cars in the country.

To start with, Xpeng has introduced the G6 and X9 in Indonesia, the only EVs it developed for both left- and right-hand drive markets. MPVs dominate Indonesia’s auto market, with people movers accounting for five of the country’s ten best-selling cars in 2024. Given the strong popularity of the family-oriented body style, the X9 will likely play a key role in establishing Xpeng’s brand image in
the market. The company has yet to announce the prices of the G6 and X9.

Xpeng has appointed Erajaya Active Lifestyle (ERAL), a subsidiary of Erajaya Group, as its distributor in Indonesia. “Erajaya Active Lifestyle is a ‘neo-force’ in Indonesia and is the right partner for XPENG in the local market,” Xpeng Vice Chairman and President Brian Gu said. “Our deep understanding of the local market, as well as our strong commitment to innovative brands, make us the ideal strategic partner to support XPENG’s growth,” ERAL CEO Djohan Sutanto
commented on the collaboration.

According to a report from Kompas.com, ERAL may start accepting orders for Xpeng EVs in Indonesia in May or June. In a follow-up report, the local publication stated that the company plans to set up six showrooms in the Greater Jakarta area.

Xpeng has partnered with Handal Indonesia Motor (HIM) to localise the G6 and X9, as per the first Kompas.com report. HIM will assemble them from completely knocked-down kits (CKDs) in Purwakarta, West Java, starting in the second half of the year. The company already assembles cars for several other Chinese automakers, including Chery, Jetour, and Neta. Just last month,
Geely also appointed HIM as its contract manufacturer in the country.

Indonesia is Xpeng’s fourth big market in Southeast Asia. The Chinese automaker entered Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia last year. Last month, the company appointed distributors in Poland, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, strengthening its position in Europe. It aims to operate in more than 60 markets globally by the end of this year.
