Tesla recalls 46,000 Cybertrucks in the US

Tesla has been forced to recall tens of thousands of its electric pickups in the US. The issue stems from a stainless steel trim piece on the exterior that has come loose on multiple vehicles, potentially posing a hazard to other road users.

This news comes at a highly inopportune time for Tesla. In recent months, demand for the company’s vehicles has declined, and its stock price has taken a hit. Now, on top of that, thousands of Cybertrucks need to be recalled -for something as trivial as a decorative stainless steel trim piece on the exterior. These trims are attached with adhesive, but as it turns out, they can come loose.

According to a document on the website of the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 151 Cybertruck owners have already reported the issue as a warranty case. While Tesla is not aware of any injuries or accidents related to the detaching trim pieces, the risk remains. A trim piece coming loose while driving could become a projectile, potentially injuring pedestrians or striking the windshield of another vehicle, leading to an accident.

Tesla is now voluntarily recalling all 46,096 Cybertrucks produced since the start of production on 13 November 2023 and 27 February 2025. The figure is noteworthy not just because of the recall itself—it also provides the first concrete insight into how many Cybertrucks Tesla has built so far. Until now, the company has kept production and delivery numbers under wraps. CEO Elon Musk had previously suggested that Tesla aimed to ramp up production to 250,000 units per year over time.

In the workshops, the Cybertruck’s trim pieces will now be securely fastened using screws. This isn’t the first time Tesla has opted for such a fix in a Cybertruck recall – when the decorative cover of the accelerator pedal came loose and risked jamming, the company also turned to screws to resolve the issue.

In total, this marks the eighth recall for the Cybertruck. However, one of these was resolved via an over-the-air software update, meaning affected vehicles did not need to be brought into the workshop.
