Pilot Company, GM & EVgo expand US charging network
The network currently includes charging hubs along the I-75 highway between Michigan and Georgia, as well as a number of ‘popular corridors’ including Dallas to Nashville, Detroit to Cleveland, Minneapolis to Milwaukee, and San Antonio to Houston. It aims to offer charging hubs at 50-mile intervals across the US.
The three companies first launched their collaboration in 2022, with charging infrastructure located at Pilot and Flying J locations. Many of these hubs feature overhead canopies and pull-through charging stalls built for towing trailers, as well as lounges, on-site food options, restrooms and 24/7 access. The GM partner EVgo installs, operates and maintains 350kW fast chargers at the sites, which it says can recharge EVs in up to 15 minutes. There are an average of four charging points available in each location. Meanwhile, GM offers its booking app so drivers can easily locate chargers on their journey.
Wade Sheffer, VP of GM Energy, said: “By expanding fast-charging access along major travel routes, our work with Pilot Company and EVgo will give EV drivers more confidence to take long trips with ease. With more than 130 locations now open, which customers can easily find using the GM brand app, we’re helping ensure that charging is seamless and convenient – so drivers can focus on the adventure ahead.”
“As we strive to be the leading energy and experience provider people rely on to fuel their journeys, our travel centres are uniquely able to fill a need for EV owners who are looking to make the most of their miles,” added Shannon Sturgil, senior VP of alternative fuels at Pilot. “The collaboration with General Motors and EVgo will continue to bring highway-based charging to more regions and routes where this infrastructure is needed.”
Announced in 2022, the partnership between the three companies opened its first 17 locations in 2023 – and hopes to one day operate up to 500 hubs at 50-mile intervals across the US.
