EnBW scales back targets for HPC network expansion in Germany

EnBW has significantly slimmed down its plans for expanding the charging network due to the sluggish ramp-up of electric mobility. Instead of the 30,000 fast-charging points that had been announced, the energy company now only wants to operate "more than 20,000 fast-charging points" in Germany by 2030.

That is quite the U-turn compared to earlier plans. At the IAA Mobility in September 2023, EnBW announced that it would double its annual investment for the development of fast-charging infrastructure in Germany to around 200 million euros and that it wanted to operate around 30,000 fast-charging points in this country by 2030.

Even with the previous budget of 100 million euros per year, EnBW had become the operator of the largest fast-charging network in the country – and has continued to expand it lead. At the turn of the year, the energy supplier’s nationwide HPC network comprised about 6,000 charging points.

However, EnBW is now scaling back the expansion targets for 2030 that were set a year and a half ago. This was announced by the company’s management at the latest annual results press conference.

Dirk Güsewell, a member of the board of management, is quoted on the company’s homepage as saying: “We are also on track when it comes to e-mobility: We went well beyond the 6,000 fast-charging points mark in 2024 and connected more charging points to the grid than ever before in the second half of the year. We want to expand our fast-charging infrastructure to more than 20,000 fast-charging points by 2030 and consolidate our market share of around 20% in this sector.”
