DE: EnBW earmarks €200m to build out HPC infrastructure

EnBW has doubled its investment in fast-charging infrastructure in Germany to around 200 million euros annually. By 2030, the energy company wants to operate about 30,000 charge points nationwide. Large “Hypernetz” hubs are under construction.

EnBW already operates the largest fast-charging network in Germany. Its “Hypernetz” currently comprises 3,400 high-power charge points and runs on an annual budget of €100 mn. The fact that EnBW nevertheless doubled its investment must stir up the competition.

“Fast-charging infrastructure is the basis for a successful transport turnaround: Where drivers already have access to a dense and efficient public charging network, it is much easier for them to decide in favour of an electric vehicle,” says EnBW board member Colette Rückert-Hennen about the increased budget. “We are the driving force here – both in the size and quality of our fast charging network. EnBW is underpinning this leading role and sending a strong signal.”

EnBW says it will begin constructing five new fast-charging parks spread across Germany in September alone. The company is building a large site east of Bremen. In North Rhine-Westphalia, a charging park is being built in the south of Bielefeld and another in Bavaria, east of Nuremberg. EnBW is also building two new sites in Rhineland-Palatinate. The new fast-charging facilities and many other locations are scheduled to go into operation this year. There is no information on the size of the five sites.

More information may be released during the IAA Mobility show in Munich next week. EnBW, at the Open Space at Königsplatz, wants to present its “NextLevel Ladepark” (Ladepark is German for charging hub). This concept features improved accessibility, including barrier-free charging stations. EnBW adds that it wants to set “new standards in sustainability in the industry”. However, EnBW does not mention whether the five new fast-charging parks will already be “NextLevel”.

“From our point of view, e-mobility is a system with the customers and their needs at the centre. To achieve this, all aspects of e-mobility must be cleverly networked. The motto of ‘Experience Connected Mobility’ at the IAA sums up our approach to the transport revolution,” says Rückert-Hennen.
