The first phase of the E|Road Centre will run until November 2027 and will be made permanent once it has been successfully completed. The Fraunhofer IISB further added that the E|Road Centre is another building block in the high-tech spectrum of the Cleantech Innovation Park in Hallstadt near Bamberg.

Once operational, the research centre will focus on wireless charging technologies, both stationary as well as while driving. The Fraunhofer IISB also specifies that the technology will be useful for local environments, such as port facilities and logistics centres, due to the presence of container transporters or other freight vehicles travelling on fixed routes.

“Contactless charging of electric vehicles opens up completely new possibilities. Charging can be carried out without losing time while driving. This makes electric vehicles more flexible, more practical and more economical,” said Minister of State Hubert Aiwanger, adding: “We are supporting this pioneering project with around 7.5 million euros. We are thus providing targeted impetus for the transformation of our automotive industry and sustainably strengthening Bavaria as a centre of innovation.”

The Fraunhofer Institute in Erlangen is plans to work closely with the Chair of Manufacturing Automation and Production Systems (FAPS) at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU). Both sides want to contribute their respective strengths. “With the opening of the technology centre, we are providing a decisive impetus for the future of electromobility and the transformation of the automotive industry. Through initiatives such as the E|Road Center, we are strengthening Bavaria as a location for innovation,” emphasises Professor Florian Risch, Head of Department for the E-Road Center at Fraunhofer IISB. “And the unique combination of our expertise in semiconductor technology, power electronics and production technology gives us a real technological edge.”
