Xiaomi YU7 to Launch in Three Variants

The Chinese tech brand has previewed its second electric car, the YU7, ahead of its official debut. The electric SUV will be offered in three variants, with pricing to be revealed at the market launch in July.

Initial details of the vehicle leaked via type approval documents in December last year, suggesting two all-wheel-drive variants. Xiaomi has since revised its plans, now confirming three configurations for its first electric SUV.

Before diving into the powertrains, a quick overview of the vehicle: the YU7 measures 4.99 metres in length—slightly longer than the SU7 electric saloon—and features a three-metre wheelbase. The body is 1.99 metres wide (excluding mirrors) and 1.61 metres tall. Depending on the version, kerb weight ranges from 2,140 to 2,460 kilograms.

The relatively high weight is likely due to the sizeable battery packs. Notably, the YU7 does not use the SU7 base model’s 73.6 kWh LFP battery. Even the entry-level rear-wheel-drive (RWD) variant features a 96.3 kWh LFP battery from BYD. This powers a 235 kW rear motor—up from 220 kW in the SU7. Unlike the SU7, which only shifts to an 800-volt system in higher-spec trims, all YU7 variants use Xiaomi’s 800V silicon carbide high-voltage platform.

Next up is the all-wheel-drive YU7 Pro, which also uses the 96.3 kWh LFP battery, offering a combined system output of 365 kW. The top-tier YU7 Max AWD delivers a hefty 508 kW, as previously indicated in regulatory filings. It features a 101.7 kWh NMC battery pack from CATL. With up to 866 Nm of torque, the Max AWD sprints from 0–100 kph in just 3.23 seconds (manufacturer figures), reaching a top speed of 253 kph. The LFP variants are also brisk, reaching 240 kph and hitting 100 kph in 5.88 seconds (RWD) and 4.27 seconds (Pro AWD), respectively.

Xiaomi has pitched the SU7 saloon as a performance-oriented EV with aggressive pricing—reportedly under €30,000 in some trims. However, social media reports have highlighted brake performance issues, with some crashes linked to braking systems not matching the drivetrain’s capabilities. More recently, an SU7 crash involving a semi-autonomous driving system raised concerns, prompting speculation that Xiaomi postponed the YU7’s Shanghai Motor Show launch. Nonetheless, the YU7 is still expected to arrive by mid-2025.

The electric motors are supplied by United Automotive Electronics (UAES) and branded as ‘V6-Plus’ motors—suggesting ICE V6-comparable performance. Batteries support fast charging at up to 5.2C, allowing for a CLTC-rated 620 kilometres of range added in just 15 minutes. The RWD variant offers the longest CLTC range at 835 kilometres. The 365 kW AWD model is rated for 770 km, and the 508 kW Max for 760 km—despite its larger battery.

Xiaomi also aims to deliver comfort: front seats come with Nappa leather upholstery and massage functions, reclining up to 123 degrees for relaxed charging stops. Rear seats recline up to 135 degrees and feature their own touchscreen for climate, media, and navigation control. The dashboard houses a large central touchscreen and a 1.10-metre-wide ‘HyperVision’ display—a trio of slim LEDs along the windscreen base showing critical driving data, media, blind-spot alerts and custom widgets.

All YU7 models come equipped with lidar sensors, 4D millimetre-wave radar, and anti-glare coated cameras for optimal image quality. The vehicle’s autonomous functions are processed via Nvidia’s Drive AGX Thor platform, running Xiaomi’s proprietary assisted driving software.

Despite its near five-metre length, which surpasses the facelifted Tesla Model Y ‘Juniper’ (4.80 m), the YU7 is seen by Chinese EV media as a key rival. CN EV Post speculates the SUV could become “a real threat to Tesla’s hot-selling Model Y in China.” CarNewsChina has already published a detailed spec comparison—no surprise, as the mid-size electric SUV segment in China is one of the most competitive globally.
