Xiaomi’s new electric SUV is called the YU7

The name, images and some key technical data for Xiaomi's second electric model have now been released from the registration application in China. The electric SUV will be called YU7 and will be five metres long.

Strictly speaking, the length is given as 4,999 millimetres in the registration application. This means that the YU7 will only just surpass the SU7 electric sedan, which measures 4,997 millimetres. The two models are not only comparable in terms of their length of around five metres, the design language also makes the relationship clear. Although the YU7 is an SUV, the model does not appear bulky and the sloping roofline makes a dynamic impression. As the SU7 has often been compared to a Porsche Taycan, the electric Macan could have been used as a reference for the YU7.

For the time being, there will probably only be all-wheel drive; 220 kW of power is specified for the electric motor on the front axle and 288 kW for the one on the rear axle. That would be a total output of 508 kW – and therefore even slightly more than the SU7 Max. The SU7 is also known to have a power output of 220 kW, but this is the rear-wheel drive version – the YU7, on the other hand, will only be available as an all-wheel drive model.

The battery, the capacity of which is not yet known, comes from CATL. However, the saloon could serve as a reference for the battery size: The SU7 is available with a 73.6 kWh LFP battery in the base version, with two NMC batteries with energy contents of up to 94.3 and 101 kWh above it. As the registration application for the YU7 mentions a ‘Li-ion ternary battery’, the LFP version is unlikely to be offered in the SUV.

The weight and top speed of the YU7 are already known. The registration application states 2,405 kilograms and 253 kph. The SU7 has a top speed of 210 kph, while the SU7 Max all-wheel drive version with 495 kW can reach speeds of up to 265 kph. However, several videos have been published from China showing an alleged brake failure in the SU7 after just a few laps on a racetrack. The braking system does not appear to be designed for the vehicle’s performance. However, it is not known whether Xiaomi has addressed this issue with the YU7.

In China, it is mandatory that new vehicles are published with standardised data in an official catalogue so that consumers can compare the new model with other vehicles. In the case of the YU7, the data set was published on 10 December and consumers can now provide feedback for a week. Inclusion in the catalogue is the last major step before a model is approved for sale in China.

Alongside the publication of the licence application on Weibo, Xiaomi has announced that the official market launch is planned for June or July 2025. It had already become apparent that Xiaomi’s second electric car model would be an SUV, but most recently it was assumed that it would make its debut in the first quarter of next year.

Xiaomi only started deliveries of the SU7 in April. In November, the mark of 100,000 vehicles was already reached, which was originally the target for the year as a whole – Xiaomi is now aiming for 130,000 deliveries. Sales targets for the YU7 are not yet known, nor are any prices.
