Tallinn Airport opens revamped EV charging hub
As part of the first phase of the upgrades, 32 new AC chargers with 22kW capacity were installed, with the airport ‘prepared’ to increase this number in future. The chargers are in a clearly marked, dedicated zone in which parking is only permitted for actively charging EVs. It’s the product of a collaboration between Tallinn Airport and the Estonian energy company Alexela AS.
Each charger is equipped with Type 2 cables that can be used for either BEVs or plug-in hybrids, with payment available online or using the Alexela mobile app or payment card. The airport has also stated that the chargers are powered by the airport’s solar array – weather permitting.
Eero Pärgmäe, Member of the Management Board at Tallinn Airport, said: “Our aim is to offer a service that gives our customers peace of mind – they can leave their car at the airport and return to a fully charged vehicle. Depending on the popularity of the charging area, we are prepared to increase the number of chargers in the future.” However, given that parking is only permitted for EVs that are actively charging, no information has been provided on how availability will be managed for cars that have been left by travellers.
Kristjan Suurorg, Head of E-Mobility at Alexela, also outlined how his company’s cooperation with Tallinn Airport is an example of how new charging infrastructure can be built in public locations. Suurorg said: “Our goal is to make everyday charging a natural part of the user journey – whether at home, on the road, or at the destination.”
