The funds will go towards more than doubling the brand’s current fleet of electric vans as well as installing charging infrastructure to support their deployment. The company states that by September this year, 21 of its stores will have fully electric home delivery fleets as a result – with these vehicles expected to make more than 1 million deliveries over the subsequent year.

There’s no word exactly on which electric vans will be purchased yet. However, Asda’s first electric van was based on a Maxus Deliver 9 chassis cab, with other electric vans also including Ford eTransits. These feature ambient, refrigerated and frozen zones for food storage. They were first rolled out at stores in Gillingham Pier, Old Kent Road, and Sheffield Chaucer back in 2023.

The company estimates that the new vans will have a range of up to 130 miles and could help it cut emissions by up to 1700kg of CO2 per year. Emma Newton, senior director of ecommerce last mile for Asda, said: “We’re always looking at how we can better serve our customers and for new ways to reduce our carbon emissions as a business, so we’re delighted to be more than doubling our electric fleet of grocery home shopping vehicles.”

The supermarket also operates other alternative fuel vehicles including the UK’s largest single fleet of LNG-fuelled trucks.
