BMW Group Korea & KERI to build EV interoperability test centre
What it means is that the new Global Interoperability Testing Center (GIOTEC) will be launched at the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI) in Ansan in the latter half of 2025. The companies remain somewhat vague on the specifics, but BMW Group Korea state it will focus on building a ‘cooperative system’ that addresses compability issues between EVs and charging systems, such as outages or inability to charge. In a press release, the firm said it expects these issues “to improve significantly”, but offered little in the way of details as to how it will be achieved.
BMW Group Korea has said that “major domestic and foreign automobile brands, manufacturers of EV chargers, and charging operators are participating” in the testing centre, but have not yet shared who these are at this stage.
The launch of the GIOTEC centre was announced at a joint ceremony between the two organisations, following an inspection of BMW Group R&D Center Korea’s latest facilities. These are focused on ‘certification and product development tasks’ and charging infrastructure for the domestic market in South Korea.
The partnership between BMW Group and KERI follows efforts by BMW Group Korea to expand charging infrastructure in the country, such as through the Charging Next project which has seen 2400 chargers installed across South Korea to date. The company states it plans to install a further 600 chargers this year.
