Tritium joins forces with Hubject for Plug&Charge

Hubject has teamed up with Tritium to integrate Plug&Charge functionality into Tritium's charging infrastructure worldwide. To this end, the partners are combining Hubject's Intercharge platform and Plug&Charge ecosystem with Tritium's DC charging stations.

The Plug & Charge functionality for all Tritium chargers is set to be enabled in line with ISO 15118 standards, according to the Berlin-based company. The aim is to implement a “secure and scalable authentication framework” that allows vehicles to authenticate automatically and initiate the charging process without the need for apps or RFID cards.

In addition to electric car drivers, charge point operators are also expected to benefit from the partnership. It is said to offer “support for charge point operators (CPOs) globally to enable and scale Plug&Charge with minimal integration effort.”

“Tritium’s fast charging technology and global reach, combined with Hubject’s Plug&Charge infrastructure, is a powerful combination,” said Christian Hahn, CEO of Hubject. “As the EV industry continues to grow, we believe Plug&Charge will be a fundamental enabler of driver satisfaction and network efficiency. This collaboration is another important milestone in our mission to make Plug&Charge available everywhere.”

Hubject states that the integration is expected to take place gradually. “The integration is being rolled out in phases, starting with key markets in North America, Europe, and APAC, before expanding worldwide,” the press release reads. For the time being, this will apparently primarily affect new charging stations. Hubject adds: “Tritium is also planning to enable Plug&Charge functionality on select existing charger models, extending the benefits to current installations across their global network.”

Formerly based in Australia, the Tritium was acquired by the Indian charging station provider Exicom last year. Exicom forged a partnership with Hubject almost exactly 12 months ago just before it acquired Tritium. The Australian-founded Tritium had been using its own Plug&Charge technology since 2020, ensuring communication between the vehicle and the charger, without needing extra cards or other intermediaries.
