UK: NGED rolls out EV chargers at substations to decarbonise fleet

National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) is installing over 182 new EV charging bays at substations and offices across the UK to decarbonise its 1,000-strong operational fleet. The distribution network operator aims to keep all staff within ten miles of a charger.

The distribution network operator (DNO), which serves the Midlands, South Wales, and South West England, says this expansion brings its total charging network to 444 bays. It would thus be one of the UK’s largest privately owned EV charging networks.

All new installations will be high-powered DC units. However, the DNO does not give specific figures. It does say that each new charging site will be integrated into its internal app, allowing employees to locate and use chargers efficiently. The goal is that no operational staff member is ever more than ten miles from a functioning NGED-operated charger.

Needless to say, the chargers will support NGED’s operational fleet of over 1,000 electric vehicles, which comprises around 400 commercial electric vans and 600 electric cars. The sites were selected based on analysis of the company’s most-travelled routes, backed by an investment of £13 million.

“We’re committed to providing a strategically located charging infrastructure to enable us to grow our decarbonised fleet, while at the same time maintaining an excellent standard of service to our 20 million customers”, said Ian Smith, NGED’s head of operations support. “Using substations as charging locations makes logistical and financial sense as a way of expanding our network for NGED EV drivers, who are out and about seven days a week and often operating in severe weather.”
