Shell fuel station in Finland cuts out fossil fuels

The Shell petrol station in Ylöjärvi, Finland, has stopped selling fossil fuels. The former petrol station is being converted by energy company St1 into Finland's first purely electric car charging location.

The station in Ylöjärvi will be equipped with ultra-fast chargers with a maximum output of 400 kW. St1 already offers fast charging stations at 41 petrol stations across Finland, nine of which were opened this year. The company also operates in other Nordic countries: charging is also available at 37 petrol stations in Sweden and 30 petrol stations in Norway. The company’s first location dedicated exclusively to charging electric cars was opened in Oslo in spring 2025.

St1 currently offers charging stations for electric cars under the name St1 Charge. The switch to a purely electric petrol station was an obvious choice, with the aim of retaining the petrol station’s restaurant and car wash at the same time. Furthermore, the company adds that, as part of its ‘One Brand’ strategy, the Shell Ylöjärvi station will be rebranded in autumn 2025.

This comes after the phase-out of St1’s Shell licensing agreement, under which around 630 Shell-branded sites will be converted across the Nordic countries. St1 estimates that the unified network will total around 1,250 energy stations.

“We’ve been expanding our St1 Charge high-power charging network across the Nordics at a rapid pace this year. However, this marks the first time in Finland that we’re continuing operations at the station without any liquid fuels,” said Juha Vanninen, Head of Retail in Finland at St1.

St1 received financial support for investments in its charging network from the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) programme, which has co-financed infrastructure in Finland and Sweden. In addition, the Finnish Energy Authority has supported the construction of charging stations in Finland.
