Leapmotor brings compact electric car B05 to Europe

Stellantis partner Leapmotor unveiled the B05 at the IAA as a world premiere. In China, it will be marketed under the name Lafa 5. In addition to the compact B05 model, the B10, which is now going on sale in Europe, will also be on display.

Leapmotor positions the B05 as a “sporty C-segment hatchback for the new generation of urban trendsetters.” The model is 4.43 metres long, 1.88 metres wide and 1.52 metres high, placing it at the upper end of the C-segment. At 2.74 metres, the wheelbase is roughly on par with many of Volkswagen’s MEB models (2.77 metres).

The manufacturer has not yet provided any details about the drive system – apart from the fact that it will be emission-free. Instead of concrete data, there are only marketing statements. The B05 “was designed for everyone who lives life at full throttle and chases new trends.” Leapmotor writes that the car is a “bold expression of performance ambition, and cutting-edge innovation.” However, the dimensions suggest that the B05 is based on the LEAP3.5 platform and will therefore have similarities to the B10 SUV model in terms of drive systems.

When it comes to the appearance of the B05, it is clear that Leapmotor has found its design language. The new compact model fits neatly into the existing model portfolio without simply being a smaller version of the B10; Leapmotor itself refers to it as having a ‘tech-nature aesthetic’. The design of the front and rear shows the family resemblance, but the B05 still goes its own way, for example, with its slightly more pronounced headlights and lower air intake.

Overall, the B05 has a rather sporty design. The 19-inch rims and frameless doors give it a dynamic look, while the 1.88-metre-wide shoulders make the model appear solid and broad on the road. At the same time, this is also intended to provide generous space in the interior. However, at 1.88 metres wide without exterior mirrors, it may be a tight fit in many older European garages.

“The B05 is more than a car—it’s a statement. It reflects our commitment to innovation, accessibility, and empowering the next generation of drivers across Europe and beyond,” says Zhu Jiangming, Global CEO of Leapmotor.

In addition to the B05, Leapmotor also unveiled the B10 at the IAA. The already familiar electric SUV was officially launched on the European market during the trade fair. The starting price is €29,900, but may vary slightly depending on the EU market: this price was confirmed at the end of July. “This makes the Leapmotor B10 one of the most competitive electric SUVs in its class,” Leapmotor wrote.

The B10 offers two battery options: 56.2 kWh (Pro) and 67.1 kWh (ProMax). The range is 361 and 434 kilometres, respectively, according to WLTP. The DC charging capacity is up to 168 kW, which means the battery can be charged from 30 to 80 per cent in less than 20 minutes. Leapmotor does not specify the value from 10 to 80 per cent. On the AC side, both batteries can be charged at 11 kW. The drive is provided by a 160 kW electric motor with 240 Nm of torque.

Delivery of the B10 is set to begin at the same time as its market launch at the IAA. The B10 will be available in over 30 countries and regions, including Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia-Pacific and South America. For the time being, however, the vehicle will still be imported from China to Europe and will therefore be subject to EU special tariffs. According to the latest information, production of the B10 at a Stellantis plant in Spain is not scheduled to start before the third quarter of 2026.
