Kia introduces plug & charge in Europe and North America
Kia states that the feature will support a wide range of both high-powered and AC charging networks, thanks to partnerships with charge point operators in both Europe and North America. The roll-out will begin this year with the Kia EV9, EV6, and the forthcoming EV3, with other models to follow.
To be specific, Kia says that eligible 2025 EV6 vehicles will gain the capability by the end of September, while eligible 2026 EV9s will receive the feature in Q4 of this year. Current vehicle owners will be contacted directly by Kia about new releases, although it’s worth saying that Plug & Charge will only be available to those with an active Kia Connect subscription and membership of the Kia Charge Pass Program.
Plug & Charge essentially means authentication and billing are handled automatically when a compatible EV is connected to a public charger. The system relies on secure digital certificates stored in the vehicle using the ISO 15118 protocol, enabling drivers to simply plug in and charge without having to pay separately. Kia states that its customers will be able to activate the function via the Kia Connect app and link it to the preferred charging service contract.
Kia states that Plug & Charge is part of its wider “EV Mobility Experience” strategy which also includes over-the-air updates and digital services aimed at simplifying the ownership journey. Sujith Somasekharan, Kia America’s Connected Car & Mobility Director, said: “With Plug & Charge, we’re making the EV experience more user-friendly than ever. Our goal is to make electrified mobility effortless, secure, and connected – and this technology brings us one step closer to that reality.”
