The Thai company Seudamgo by Leopard Transportation has ordered ten Candela P-12 electric hydrofoils from Swedish electric boat manufacturer Candela. These will initially be used on the route between the mainland and Koh Kood Island in Trat Province.

The area of Koh Kood is known for its natural beauty and is intentionally kept less developed than other tourist destinations in Thailand. The purchase of the ten Candela P-12 electric hydrofoils means the pristine island area can be accessed with zero noise or fuel pollution. The hydrofoil technology used by Candela also means that the boats fly above the water, meaning virtually no wake is created, which gives in minimal impact on the natural environment, as well as using 80 per cent less energy than traditional boats, according to Candela.

Gustav Hasselskog, founder and CEO of Candela, noted, “By replacing noisy, polluting speedboats with our electric flying ships, Seudamgo is protecting one of Thailand’s most beautiful destinations.”

The 10 hydrofoils headed to Thailand will be the upscale Business version of P-12. Candela says these include premium seating and a spacious, airy interior for 20 passengers, as well as ‘ample’ luggage capacity. In service, the hydrofoils will be cruising at 25+ knots and cover the 20-nautical-mile route in just 40 minutes.

After premiering its hydrofoil electric ferries for public transport services in and around Stockholm, the Swedish company has now provided emission-free hydrofoil ferries for transport services in New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, India and the USA. Thailand is an important market for Candela, and the Southeast Asian country is home to Candela’s largest office outside Sweden, located in Bangkok. The country’s vast waterborne transport sector services more than 1,500 islands, and many of these rank among the world’s top tourist destinations.

“Thailand is one of the most exciting markets for sustainable water transport,” says Björn Antonsson, Candela’s Regional CEO Asia-Pacific. “With its thousands of islands, big rivers and vibrant tourism industry, the country can truly benefit from our technology.
