Chalmers researchers reveal 500 kW induction technology
Researchers at Chalmers University in Sweden have developed an induction technology that can reach nearly 100% efficiency and charges with 500 kW – effectively putting it on par with wired solutions. The team says the system was so complete they could soon present it to the industry, especially since they smartly combine existing components.

Norwegian shipping company orders two hydrogen ferries
Two hydrogen ferries will serve Norway’s longest ferry route across the Vestfjord from 2025. Shipping company Torghatten Nord commissioned The Norwegian Ship Design Company with the design. PowerCell will supply the fuel cell technology, and control and propulsion technology comes from SEAM.

Artemis Technologies presents electric hydrofoil concept
Artemis Technologies, a company based in Belfast, has designed an all-electric passenger ferry to enter service in 2024. The operator Condor Ferries wants to use the hydrofoil as part of a pilot project between Belfast and Bangor in Northern Ireland and is banking on the ferry being fast.

NZ: Auckland to launch first electric ferries in 2024
The New Zealand Government has confirmed Auckland will receive its first electric ferries by 2024 since the city plans to have an entirely electric fleet of passenger ferries by 2040. Local marine technology firm EV Maritime got Danfoss Editron on board to deliver the drive.

No new combustion vehicles in Washington State by 2030
The US state of Washington has passed a bill banning the sale, purchase and registration of new petrol-powered vehicles of model year 2030 or later. If it becomes law, Washington will phase out internal combustion vehicles five years earlier than other states such as California.

Ballard delivers fuel cell modules for Norwegian ferries
Ballard Power Systems has delivered two, 200 kW FCwave modules to Norled, one of Norway’s largest ferry and express boat operators. The fuel cell modules will power the world’s first liquid hydrogen-powered ferry, the ‘MF Hydra’, which is to be launched later this year.

UK’s first electric sea-going ferry launches for testing
Plymouth Boat Trips and Voyager Marine have launched the UK’s first sea-going electric ferry, named e-Voyager. The electric ferry was developed in partnership with the University of Plymouth, the University of Exeter, Teignbridge Propellers, MarRI-UK and EV Parts. Testing is now underway.

Corvus Energy batteries for five all-electric ferries
Corvus Energy has been contracted to supply the battery systems for five new all-electric ferries to be built by Holland Shipyards for the transport company GVB in Amsterdam. The first electric ferry should be delivered in summer next year.
