Torqeedo and Poseidon announce a commercial-grade electric drive system for ferries with typically up to 200 passengers. Both specialist companies will combine existing components to form the novel zero-emission propulsion powered by BMW batteries.

World’s largest electric ferry launches in Norway

The world’s largest all-electric ferry yet has gone into service in Norway on a route across the Oslo Fjord. Bastø Electric is the first of three battery-powered ferries operated by the shipping company Bastø Fosen to enter Norwegian waters with more in the making in Turkey.

Stena Line plans two e-ferries on the Baltic Sea

The Swedish shipping company Stena Line plans to operate two battery-powered ships on the Gothenburg-Frederikshavn route “before 2030”. The first of the two electric ferries, whose name and key data have already been determined, is to be ordered by 2025 at the latest.

India to have the world’s largest electric ferry fleet

The world’s largest fleet of electric ferries is to go into operation in India. India’s largest shipyard, Cochin Shipyard, has now commissioned Siemens Energy to supply the drive and battery components for the first 23 of a total of 78 planned electric ferries.

A group of companies has applied to the European Union for funding to develop a large hydrogen ferry. The H2 ferry with the working title Europa Seaways is to have a fuel cell system with a capacity of up to 23 MW on board.

UK’s first electric sea-going ferry launches for testing

Plymouth Boat Trips and Voyager Marine have launched the UK’s first sea-going electric ferry, named e-Voyager. The electric ferry was developed in partnership with the University of Plymouth, the University of Exeter, Teignbridge Propellers, MarRI-UK and EV Parts. Testing is now underway.

Danfoss delivers electric drives for Thai ferries

Danfoss Editron is supplying Energy Absolute with the electric propulsion systems for Thailand’s first fleet of all-electric passenger ferries that will operate on the Chao Phraya River. Each of the 24 meter long ferries can carry 200 passengers.

Corvus Energy batteries for five all-electric ferries

Corvus Energy has been contracted to supply the battery systems for five new all-electric ferries to be built by Holland Shipyards for the transport company GVB in Amsterdam. The first electric ferry should be delivered in summer next year.

Brødrene Aa developing a 23 knot electric ferry

In Norway, a 42-meter-long, all-electric ferry for 297 passengers will soon go into operation. The Rygerelektra, built by the Norwegian shipbuilder Brødrene Aa, will be used by ferry operator Rødne Fjord Cruise as a sightseeing ship in the coastal town of Stavanger in the south of Norway.

BC Ferries to use hybrid drives from Corvus

Municipal EV fleets to be funded in Germany

The German Federal Ministry of Transport has presented 168 so-called ‘future cheques’ totalling 90 million euros as part of the Electromobility Directive. These cheques will help local authorities to purchase more than 3,800 electric vehicles and almost 2,000 charging options.

On the Oslofjord, at the northern end of which lies the Norwegian capital Oslo, five electric ferries will be put into operation by 2022 – the first of these as early as 2021. The transport authority Ruter has awarded the contract to operate the electric ferries to the Norwegian provider Boreal Sjø.

Danfoss drive used in Sweden’s biggest hybrid ferry

Danfoss Editron supplied the electric drive system for Sweden’s largest hybrid car ferry to date. The ferry is now about to go into operation. The 100-metre Tellus ferry can carry 80 cars and 297 passengers per tour and will operate with a battery capacity of 949 kWh mainly in fully electric mode.

Scandlines improving four hybrid ferries

Scandlines is upgrading to more efficient thrusters on four of its hybrid ferries. These are engine components located at each corner of the ferry. The new thrusters achieve a more homogeneous flow through the water, which causes less noise and vibration.

Norway: Siemens opens battery factory for ships

Siemens has opened an “advanced robotized and digitized” battery module factory in Trondheim, where 55 battery modules will be assembled per shift for  marine and offshore markets. The factory comprises a line with eight robot stations and a capacity of up to 300 MWh per year.

Baumüller to build ferry with hybrid drive

The German drive and automation specialist Baumüller has received an order from the Danish shipyard Hvide Sande for the supply of a hybrid drive system for a ferry. From autumn 2019, the ship will be sailing between the ports of Ærø and Rudkøbing.

Norway commissions high speed hydrogen ferry

Norway is funding a hydrogen-powered high speed ferry and a short-sea freighter through their PILOT-E programme. They awarded a grant to Hyon, a joint venture between Nel, Hexagon Composites and PowerCell Sweden to realise the project together with partners.
