£5.4 million public charging expansion for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough
The expanded public charging network will feature a combination of overnight, fast, and rapid chargers located on both residential streets, and key transport hubs. The project will focus on installing charge points in areas without off-street parking, which suggests a large proportion of the new charge points will be overnight AC chargers. The CPCA has said the funding is intended to support the region’s target of 80% of households without off-street parking being within a five minutes walk of a public charge point or on-street domestic charging.
Installation is due to begin in late 2026, with the project is set to run for a total of 15 years in partnership with Cambridgeshire County Council and Peterborough City Council. The agreement covers delivery, operation and maintenance of the charging points, although no information has yet been provided on which charge point operator (CPO) will receive the tender. This should change once contracts are awarded later in spring / summer 2026, following the release of more detailed plans for deployment.
Paul Bristow, mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, said: “With more electric cars on our roads, we need more places to charge them. This funding is a vital step in helping our communities to do so reliably and affordably. Helping more people, particularly those without off-street parking, to recharge their cars, is another example of my mission to get Cambridgeshire and Peterborough moving.”
