Maryland launches $4.9 million electric school bus grant programme
The 2026 Electric School Bus Grant Program will provide funding of up to 120 per cent of the incremental cost of eligible vehicles. Grants can be used to purchase electric school buses, install charging infrastructure, and cover associated expenses, the Maryland Energy Administration states.
Applications for the programme are open until 16 December 2025. Eligible school districts can apply via the Maryland Energy Administration’s programme webpage, which includes full guidelines, eligibility criteria, and the application process.
This follows the state Energy Administration’s recent announcement of $12 million in funding for the programme for the current year. It will see electric school buses and infrastructure introduced to seven school districts.
The grant programme complements other initiatives by the Maryland Energy Administration to promote clean energy in schools. For example, its Decarbonizing Public Schools Program currently offers $36 million in funding to support Local Education Agencies in expanding clean energy systems and implementing energy efficiency technologies. These measures aim to help districts monitor energy usage, reduce emissions, lower operational costs, and plan for high-performance, sustainable school facilities.
By combining support for electric transportation and energy efficiency, Maryland seeks to reduce emissions from school operations while improving air quality for students and lowering long-term costs for school districts.
“The air our kids breathe should be as clean as possible. That’s why our Electric School Bus Grants Program helps school districts invest in cleaner, electric buses,” said Maryland Energy Administration Director Paul G. Pinsky. “Electric buses deliver lower long-term operations and maintenance costs for school districts – and cleaner rides for our kids every day.”
