Around 130 organisations applied for the Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) funding. Following a review process, Maryland has now announced the successful recipients:

  • $1.2 million (the biggest award) to go towards fast-chargers on key transport corridors in Western Maryland
  • $650,000 towards fast chargers at locations on the state’s Eastern Shore
  • $250,000 to fund the installation of chargers at nine public parking garages in the city of Baltimore
  • $171,000 to support WSSC Water in installing workplace chargers for staff use at 10 facilities
  • $27,500 for AstraZeneca to ‘electrify’ the carpark of its Frederick facility

State authorities have also shared a map of where each Maryland Environment Secretary, Serena McIlwain, said: “These investments are about more than charging stations. They’re about building confidence in Maryland’s clean energy future. Every charger we install brings us closer to our climate goals, supports our businesses, and improves air quality for our communities.”

The Maryland DoE says it is the third and final round of funding it is distributing using the $75.7 million settlement the state received from a court case between the US Justice Department and Volkswagen. This was when the German carmaker admitted it had cheated emissions tests in the US and elsewhere using ‘defeat devices’ – software that could detect if a diesel engine was being tested and modify its performance accordingly.
