GridZon launches to protect against cable theft

German charging infrastructure provider Reload-Solution has developed a multi-level security system to protect charging cables at fast-charging stations – a frequent target for thieves. The solution, called GridZon, is currently compatible with various Alpitronic stations.

Fast-charging providers have been struggling with frequent cable thefts for some time. The resulting damage in Germany has already reached several million euros, with most thefts likely motivated by the copper contained in charging cables.

There have been some countermeasures against cable theft for a while now, such as surveillance cameras, alarm systems or thick cable sheaths like those from CatStrap. However, no solution seen so far is as sophisticated as the theft protection system developed by Reload-Solution, called GridZon. The company originally designed the system to protect its own charging stations but has now decided to make it available to the wider industry.

“Our goal was clear: simple, secure, retrofittable. No intervention in the legally calibrated system, no complicated installation, but maximum protection,” said Jonas Radau, Managing Director of Reload-Solution, on LinkedIn.

GridZon offers a multi-layered security mechanism with several features:

  • Cut-resistant cable sheath made of Dyneema fabric with warning print
  • Integrated tamper wire – automatically triggers an alarm when cut
  • No screwing to the charging station – meaning no interference with the legally relevant system
  • 117 dB loud siren
  • Flashing light as a visual alarm
  • Online monitoring via eSIM with real-time status display
  • Silent alarm via SMS, call or email
  • 3D-printed stainless steel box with security bolts
  • Optional tracker for thief tracking

The system is available for all cable lengths and is initially compatible with the popular Alpitronic fast-charging stations HYC150 / 200 and HYC300 / 400. Solutions for other charging stations are set to follow. Installation time per charging station is said to be around 1.5 to 2 hours, with the company providing both a manual and an instructional video.

Stadtwerke Schwerte near Dortmund, Germany, is already conducting a long-term field test with GridZon. The system can be pre-ordered now, with deliveries set to begin in January 2026.

Why can't the charging lead be stored and connected to the battery in the car.

While bring-your-own-cable charging stations do exist, this solution targets very thick, expensive, heavy, sometimes liquid-cooled cables used on fast charging stations that aren't practical to transport or purchase. Compatibility with existing vehicles is also an important factor.

The copper cable should be exchanged for multistand aluminium. This together with local laws to heavily fine scrap merchants for possession of that particular cable, should make their theft unprofitable.

A/C charging cables are usually supplied with the vehicle but only go up to 22kW max, more usually 32Amps.D/C goes from 50kW through 150kW and upwards, requiring a much thicker cable to carry all those Amps.
