BC Hydro’s public charging network has surpassed 700 charging points across British Columbia after taking ownership of 28 additional electric vehicle sites from the Ministry of Transportation and Transit. BC Hydro has expanded its public charging network to more than 700 ports across British Columbia following the transfer of 28 electric vehicle charging sites previously operated by the Ministry of Transportation and Transit. The new additions include 88 charging ports, comprising 33 fast chargers rated at 50 kilowatts, 16 fast chargers rated at 25 kilowatts, and 39 Level 2 chargers.

The newly transferred sites are located at highway rest stops and travel corridors throughout the province and will transition to BC Hydro’s energy-based pricing model approved by the B.C. Utilities Commission. BC Hydro expects all 28 locations to be fully integrated into its network by the end of 2025.

BC Hydro currently operates 709 charging ports at 160 sites across British Columbia and aims to reach 800 ports by spring 2026. Later this year, the company plans to introduce its first 400-kilowatt fast charger. According to BC Hydro, it has tripled the size of its public charging network over the past year, adding 418 new ports.

Once the newly transferred sites are fully operational, BC Hydro will oversee over 90 per cent of the provincial public charging network. “By transferring these 28 electric vehicle charging sites to BC Hydro, we’re streamlining our focus on maintaining a safe and efficient transportation system for all British Columbians,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Transportation and Transit.

“As electric vehicle adoption increases across B.C., we’re investing in the infrastructure needed to support that growth,” said Charlotte Mitha, President and CEO of BC Hydro. “This expansion strengthens our public charging network and ensures EV drivers benefit from BC Hydro’s reliable service, including 24/7 customer support and access to clean, affordable electricity.”
