Citroën e-C5 Aircross qualifies for UK’s £3,750 Electric Car Grant

Citroën’s new e-C5 Aircross Long Range has become the third model in the UK to qualify for the full £3,750 Electric Car Grant (ECG). The mid-sized SUV joins Ford’s Puma Gen-E and E-Tourneo Courier as the only vehicles eligible for the top subsidy under the government scheme.

The Citroën e-C5 Aircross Long Range has been added to the UK government’s list of vehicles eligible for the Electric Car Grant (ECG), making it the second manufacturer and third model overall to qualify for the higher £3,750 subsidy. The long-range version of Citroën’s new electric SUV, with a claimed range of 422 miles, now falls below the scheme’s £37,000 price cap following confirmation of its eligibility.

There are now a total of 38 models that qualify for the ECG. However, most only qualify for “Band 2,” meaning buyers receive a 1,500-pound discount. Fun fact: Citroën was the first carmaker approved for the ECG on 5 August, but also only for the 1,500-pound subsidy.

The UK announced the new subsidy scheme in July, but it is still not clear which makes and models will benefit, as the criteria remain vague. The government did announce that the ECG has a total volume of 650 million pounds, and that vehicles with a listing price of less than £37,000 could be eligible for as much as £3,750 in subsidies.

Moreover, the government further limited the price cap in August. Previously, the grant also applied to more expensive trim levels as long as the base version of the same model met the price limit. As the number of eligible vehicles grows, the UK government has introduced a price cap of £42,000.

However, as we explained in detail in this previous article, price is not the only criterion. At the core of the new Electric Car Grant is the requirement that manufacturers demonstrate verifiable commitments to decarbonisation. The battery production location, as well as the vehicle’s assembly location also play an important role.
