New South Wales opens Round 4 of fast charging grants scheme
In total, the Fast Charging Grants scheme aims to deliver 275 fast and ultra-fast charging hubs across New South Wales, each spaced no more than 5km apart in urban areas and no more than 100km apart on intercity highways. So far, there have been 3 rounds of the program which, as of May 2025, had delivered $80.4 million AUD in grants and saw a total of 196 fast charging stations installed across the state.
This time round, the scheme’s emphasis is on delivering charging infrastructure in deficient areas in order to close gaps in the state’s growing fast charging network. What the NSW government is offering to fund is up to 90 per cent of installation costs as well as several years of operating expenses (‘several’ is not precisely defined here) in order to incentivise new charging projects in these so-called ‘blackspots’ of infrastructure.
There’s a few criteria for applications; namely, all stations must be powered by renewable energy (e.g. on-site solar or battery storage); be accessible to all battery EVs; include a minimum of 2 high-powered chargers and a minimum of 4 charging bays; plus charge EVs to achieve a 10-80 per cent in charge in 10-15 minutes. Applications for Round 4 of the scheme close in April.
Terry Niemeier, NSW DDCCEEW’s Director of Transport Electrification, said: “There are more than 100,000 EVs on NSW roads and the fast charging grants are becoming popular with charge point operators and drivers alike. I’m pleased with the refinements we’ve made to the grant in this fourth round to ensure the chargers are spread further than ever before. It means more fast chargers will be rolled out across NSW’s growing regional network so anyone in an EV can feel confident that fast charging is always within reach.”
