Malaysia: Prasarana to transition entire bus fleet to electric by 2037

The state-owned Malaysian operator Prasarana Malaysia has detailed plans to electrify its bus fleet as part of its Sustainability Blueprint, including the introduction of over 1,100 electric buses between 2025 and 2030 and a full transition to EVs by 2037. The programme aligns with Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap.

It currently operates 15 electric buses on the Sunway BRT system and plans an additional 150 electric feeder buses for the LRT Shah Alam Line. Prasarana states that it will receive its last new diesel buses by March next year, and will then move to a fully electric fleet by 2037. The rollout forms part of the National Energy Transition Roadmap, which aims to electrify public transport and support green mobility across Malaysia.

The organisation added that it is ‘institutionalising sustainability in all that we do,’ noting that its Sustainability Blueprint targets a 45 per cent reduction in operational carbon emissions by 2030 through electrification, solar deployment and energy-efficiency measures.

It also installed solar panels at the BRT Sunway station and six additional sites in 2023, and further installations are planned at 75 rail and bus depots, hubs and stations over the next three years.

Prasarana is also investing in training programmes to prepare its workforce for the introduction of new electric technology. Training on EV handling, fire-safety procedures and operational readiness will be incorporated into the organisation’s safety campaign, ‘My Risk, My Responsibility,’ which aims to foster ‘a culture of safety among employees.’

Chairman Tan Sri Mohd Nasir Ahmad said: “Competency will be a key issue in everything we do. Staff will be trained first, from bus crew members to those responsible for understanding fire suppression for electric buses. We will not start electric bus operations unless we are fully prepared.”
