VW confirms temporary US exit of the ID. Buzz

Volkswagen has confirmed that there will be no 2026 model year for the ID. Buzz in the USA. However, US plans for the MEB van have not been completely canceled - a revised model is expected to follow in 2027.

Back in July, Volkswagen temporarily suspended deliveries of the ID. Buzz to the USA. At the time, there were two possible explanations: first, there was a recall for the model in the US, which required adjustments to the third row of seats. However, insiders already attributed the delivery stop to tariff issues: the ID. Buzz (including the long-wheelbase version focused on North America) is exclusively manufactured at VW Commercial Vehicles in Hanover and is therefore subject to US tariffs on automotive imports.

Recently, rumours began circulating on Reddit forums in the US that Volkswagen had completely discontinued the ID. Buzz for the American market. Dealers reportedly informed customers that the available stock would be the ‘last available’ ID. Buzz models in the country.

However, this appears to be only partially true. “Following a thorough assessment of current market conditions for electric vehicles, we have made the strategic decision not to continue production of the MY26 ID. Buzz for the US market,” a VW spokesperson told the portal Carscoops. This is allegedly only a pause and not a complete discontinuation of the model in the US: “This approach allows us to focus our resources more effectively on the existing inventory and support your retail performance during the remainder of model year 25, thereby laying a strong foundation for preparing the transition to model year 27 next year,” the spokesperson added.

However, when Carscoops followed up with further questions about the 2027 model year, VW declined to comment. Any planned changes can therefore only be speculated upon. What is certain, however, is that Volkswagen will introduce its upcoming family of small electric vehicles around the ID. Polo with the unified cell platform in Europe during 2026. Already at the IAA, the Group confirmed the introduction of the unified cell platform for MEB+ – meaning not only the small front-wheel-drive models but also larger models with rear- or all-wheel drive will switch to the unified cell platform and a cell-to-pack concept. These changes are likely to be introduced in the ID. Buzz sooner or later.

It is widely accepted that the MEB-based van will adopt the MEB+ updates. However, it remains unclear whether the ID. Buzz will return to the US market. A tariff-free US production facility is currently not planned, so this issue would persist. VW is therefore keeping its options open for the future but has paused the model, which is likely unprofitable in the US due to tariffs. Additionally, the direction of the US electric vehicle market remains uncertain: following the end of the US tax credit, the market has collapsed and will likely need time to recover.

Nissan had already taken similar steps. The Ariya electric crossover is manufactured in Japan and is also affected by tariffs. As a result, Nissan has suspended the 2026 model year for North America, though the Ariya remains available in other global markets. Here, too, there is an option for the model to return to the US in 2027—but still no certainty.
