Porsche to close EV charging network in China next year
According to local media, Porsche will shut all of its self-built charging stations in China in favour of closer ties with charging point operators. Its charging facilities will be removed from the Porsche app charging map, although it remains unclear whether the actual sites will be dismantled or otherwise sold to other charging networks.
A memo seen by local news site Yicai reportedly states: “As market conditions evolve and user charging habits continue to change, Porsche regularly evaluates the role its charging services play in supporting daily mobility.”
This follows an announcement earlier this year that Porsche will scale back its Chinese sales network to 100 locations by 2027, as well as a December 2024 announcement that Porsche China would cut the size of its workforce by a third. All this follows declining sales for the German company in what was once its largest single market – with sales peaking at 95,671 in 2021.
However, it’s not as if Porsche is abandoning China; only last month, it opened its first major development facility outside Europe in Shanghai. For years, Porsche has largely managed its Chinese business from Stuttgart. However, as part of its ‘In China for China’ strategy, the company now wants to tailor its vehicles directly to local customer need – opening its new facility on November 5th to focus on building software for the local customer base.
