Austria: ASFINAG operates 500 electric cars and phases out last combustion vehicles

Austria's motorway and expressway operator ASFINAG has fully transitioned its passenger car fleet to electric vehicles. Just recently, the last combustion-engine car was phased out of the ASFINAG fleet, which now consists of a total of 502 electric service vehicles.

ASFINAG (Autobahnen- und Schnellstraßen-Finanzierungs-Aktiengesellschaft) has described the complete phase-out of combustion-engine cars from its fleet as “a key component of the ASFINAG mobility concept, which enables and promotes sustainable and low-CO₂ mobility for the company’s 3,500 employees”. The transition was completed within six years and also includes measures to reduce business trips (‘Digital First’) and incentives to encourage greater use of public transport.

According to ASFINAG, its electric cars now cover more than ten million kilometres annually. “This makes ASFINAG’s passenger car fleet a ‘big player’ in Austria,” emphasise ASFINAG board members Hartwig Hufnagl and Herbert Kasser. “By switching to a total of 502 electric cars, we save 1,450 tonnes of CO₂ per year. Phasing out combustion-engine cars marks the end of the ‘combustion vehicle’ era and the beginning of a new chapter with our fully electric passenger car fleet, as part of our sustainability strategy.”

Peter Hanke, Austria’s Federal Minister for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure, praised ASFINAG’s commitment to driving innovation and its clear pioneering role in the mobility transition: “This demonstrates that ecological transformation and economic efficiency can go hand in hand. This milestone not only ensures a cleaner fleet but also sends an important signal for Austria’s entire business sector.”

The vehicles are charged at 44 ASFINAG service areas and one rest stop, where a total of over 300 charging points are available. “On average, EV charging stations are already available every 60 kilometres along motorways and expressways, and expansion is continually progressing,” the organisation states. As our German sister publication reported, from 2027, charging stations will also be expanded at ASFINAG rest stops, ensuring that “in the future, charging opportunities will be available every 25 kilometres across Austria’s motorway and expressway network.” Specifically, ASFINAG plans to offer more than 1,500 charging points for cars by 2030 and 1,300 charging points for electric trucks by 2035.
