Switzerland launches tender for initial fast-charging network for electric HGVs

The Swiss Federal Roads Office (FEDRO) has launched a project call for the establishment of an initial, dedicated, and demand-oriented fast-charging network for electric trucks along national roads. Divided into three lots, charging parks are to be created at 32 strategically important locations in Switzerland.

The Swiss Federal Roads Office (ASTRA) is inviting private charging providers to apply for the construction and operation of dedicated fast-charging stations for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) at rest areas and heavy traffic control centres along national roads. The tender is divided into two lots of eleven fixed locations each and one lot of ten fixed locations.

ASTRA will provide the necessary power connections and transformer stations at the sites and cover the associated costs. Future operators of the fast-charging stations will subsequently reimburse these costs through an annual compensation fee. Operators will be responsible for the planning, financing, construction, connection, operation, and maintenance of the charging stations. No subsidies are mentioned as part of this arrangement.

As part of the tender, ASTRA has already specified the number of dedicated HGV charging points required at each of the 32 locations. The number varies from as few as two CCS charging points, for example in Campagnola, to two MCS charging points and ten CCS charging points at the SVKZ Rothenburg. In total, seven of the 32 locations will include at least one MCS charging point, in line with the new Megawatt Charging Standard.

This project is reminiscent of the initial HGV charging network in Germany, which is being driven forward by the Federal Ministry of Transport and the National Centre for Charging Infrastructure. The goal is to establish 350 HGV charging parks along Germany’s motorways by 2030.

Companies interested in participating in the Swiss tender should act quickly: the first of two question rounds is currently underway, and applications must be submitted by 30 April. This call is part of Switzerland’s Roadmap Electromobility 2030, which also includes heavy goods transport. In the past, ASTRA has already tendered several fast-charging parks for electric cars along national roads on multiple occasions.
