Grab to add 20,000 GAC EVs to its ride-hailing fleet
Grab’s new fleet of 20,000 EVs will consist of three models from GAC: the Aion ES, Aion Y and Aion V. The Aion Y and Aion ES have already been gaining traction among taxi operators. The Aion V is a relatively newer model in Southeast Asia, having been launched in key markets in late 2024.
The company plans to use the new GAC EVs in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. It also operates in Myanmar and Cambodia, and already runs electric taxis in both markets, but has not confirmed any allocation for them from the 20,000-unit GAC order.
GAC models feature 90-degree door openings and offer plenty of legroom in the rear, making them well suited for ride-hailing operations, Grab said. The Chinese automaker will integrate the Grab driver app into the infotainment system, allowing drivers to conveniently receive trip requests, safety alerts and optimal route guidance with minimal distraction.
Grab will offer financing support to drivers who choose to own the GAC EVs, and it will also provide an option to rent the vehicles from its fleet partners for those who cannot afford to purchase or who simply prefer an asset-light approach. On the user side, the company already offers an “Eco-Friendly Ride” option in select markets that prioritises electrified vehicles.
Currently, Grab operates more than 11,000 EVs in Indonesia and over 10,000 EVs in Thailand, while in Singapore it exclusively uses hybrid and pure electric cars. In the Philippines, the company rolled out the country’s first fully electric taxi fleet in June last year.
