Hyundai unveils the electric Staria as a camper – perhaps

Following the world premiere of the Staria Electric, Hyundai is now presenting the Staria Camper Concept at the CMT trade fair. If the concept goes into production, it is planned as a fully electric vehicle based on the Staria Electric.

This one-off model is designed to demonstrate ‘MPV could evolve into a premium recreational vehicle tailored to the European market,’ according to Hyundai. “With demand for electric mobility and experiential travel accelerating across Europe, customers are increasingly seeking vehicles that combine everyday usability with the freedom to travel independently and comfortably.”

Hyundai aims to meet this demand with a campervan based on the Staria. At the CMT (Caravan, Motor, and Tourism) trade fair in Stuttgart, the concept car will not only be on display, but visitors can also provide ‘direct feedback’ on site. “These insights will help assess interest in Staria as a camper vehicle and may inform the development of a potential production version of the concept.,” Hyundai states.

Should a production version materialise, it is ‘it would be a fully electric vehicle based on Staria Electric,’ as previously confirmed. That Staria Electric was only unveiled by Hyundai a few days ago at the motor show in Brussels. The distinctively designed van has been part of Hyundai’s lineup since 2021, but until now, it has only been available as a petrol or full hybrid model. With the facelift, a battery-electric powertrain will be introduced in the first half of 2026. For this, the Koreans are using in-house technology from the E-GMP models: the 84.0 kWh battery and the 160 kW powertrain, for example, are already familiar from the Ioniq 5. As one of the few electric vans, the Staria features an 800-volt system and high charging capacities. However, the range of the 5.26-metre-long vehicle is estimated at around 400 kilometres under WLTP conditions, with a final figure yet to be confirmed.

For the Staria Camper Concept, a fully integrated, electrically operated pop-up roof has been installed. “Engineered to preserve Staria aerodynamic efficiency, the pop-up roof also helps reduce wind noise and buffeting while driving,” Hyundai explains. “Finished in the same body-coloured, high-quality material as the rest of the roof, it can be raised or lowered effortlessly at the touch of a button.”

The pop-up roof also features integrated solar panels with a peak output of 520 watts. On a day with five hours of sunlight, these can generate up to 2.6 kWh of electricity—either for the traction battery or for extended, off-grid use of the camper. On board, there is a 36-litre refrigerator, for example. Additionally, the front individual seats can be rotated 180 degrees. In the rear, the seats can be flattened at the push of a button, quickly transforming the interior into a sleeping area for two people. The camper also includes a small sink, an outdoor shower, and an awning.

While a potential production model is intended to be fully electric, the one-off exhibited at the trade fair is likely not yet electric. The press images released by Hyundai show a large front grille with copper-coloured accents. However, the electric version unveiled in Brussels features a closed front, which also integrates the charging port.
