Chery debuts plug-in hybrid Jaecoo 7 SHS in Germany

Chinese manufacturer Chery is entering the German market through its subsidiaries Omoda and Jaecoo. The company has chosen the Jaecoo 7 SHS as its first passenger vehicle in the new market, a plug-in hybrid SUV with up to 90 kilometers of electric range, priced at €36,900 by the Chinese automaker.

Chery is the world’s leading exporter among Chinese automakers and has been active in other global regions for two decades. With its subsidiaries Omoda and Jaecoo, which are specifically designed for international markets, the group is now aiming to establish itself in Germany. The manufacturer is targeting two distinct audiences with these brands: Omoda, according to its marketing language, is intended to appeal to a progressive, urban demographic, while Jaecoo embodies the spirit of adventure. The company is already active in other EU countries, such as Spain.

Chery showcased some of its models at the IAA Mobility in Munich last September (link in German). However, the brand’s debut in Germany is not a battery-electric vehicle but a plug-in hybrid, which Chery can import without additional tariffs: the Jaecoo 7 SHS is based on Chery’s ‘Super Hybrid System’ platform, presented in Munich, which is designed to enable combined ranges of up to 1,200 kilometres. The SHS in the name refers to this platform. For context, the Jaecoo 7—without the SHS designation—is a combustion-engine SUV.

The technical specifications for the new plug-in hybrid indicate an electric range of up to 90 kilometres and a total range of 1,200 kilometres. The complete hybrid powertrain delivers 205 kW and 365 Nm of torque. Breaking down the individual components, the petrol engine provides 105 kW, while the electric motor offers up to 150 kW (continuous rated power: 70 kW). The powertrain is complemented by an LFP battery with an 18.3 kWh capacity, which can be charged at 6.6 kW AC or 40 kW DC.

Omoda & Jaecoo Deutschland GmbH, based in Frankfurt am Main, is pricing the vehicle from €36,900. The establishment of a dealership network is set to proceed gradually. “In parallel, a high-performance after-sales infrastructure has already been established in Germany,” the company states. The goal is organic growth with reliable processes, clear structures, and a product that has already proven itself in other European markets.

“The launch of our operations in Germany is very special for us. With great respect for this market, we began setting up our research and development centre in Raunheim nearly a decade ago. With the JAECOO 7 SHS, we are now taking our first step in sales—with a product that has already demonstrated strong market acceptance in other regions and, as a plug-in hybrid, precisely meets the current demands of German customers,” says Eric Zheng, Head of Germany Operations at Omoda & Jaecoo.

One thing is clear: Chinese hybrid vehicle exports to the EU have surged recently, specifically by 155 percent in 2025. In contrast, exports of highly tariffed electric vehicles to the EU increased by only twelve percent last year. While the absolute numbers of Chinese plug-in hybrids in the EU are not yet significantly higher than those of pure electric vehicles, industry observers note that the strong dynamics in hybrid imports reflect a logical strategic shift by Chinese manufacturers to offset tariffs on battery-electric vehicles. Moreover, this trend is going global: worldwide, hybrid vehicles now account for a third of Chinese passenger car exports, according to a recent article in The Economist.

Against this backdrop, the European Commission is reportedly considering the introduction of additional tariffs on Chinese hybrid vehicles—similar to those on pure electric cars.
