7,229 electric cars sold in Norway during April

7,229 new electric passenger cars were registered in Norway in April, up 96.9 per cent compared to the same month in the last Covid-year. Norway’s most successful model across all drive types in April was the VW ID.4 with 1,824 buyers.

BMW to launch battery production in Leipzig

The BMW Group is starting production of battery components at its Leipzig and Regensburg plants. On 3 May 2021, the series production of battery modules will start in Leipzig. The Regensburg plant already began painting battery cells for high-voltage batteries in April.

BYD makes millions in profit in Q1 of 2021

BYD achieved sales of around 41 billion yuan (approx. 5.1 billion euros) in the first quarter of 2021, slightly more than twice as much (+108 per cent) as in the same quarter of the previous year. Profit rose even more, although mainly because of one-off effects.

New York to ban ICE sales as of 2035

The US state of New York is following California’s example and ensuring that only zero-emission passenger cars and light commercial vehicles may be sold from 2035. By 2045, all new medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles in the US state are also to be electric.

CAM study finds PHEV sales rose in Europe over Q1

An analysis by the Center of Automotive Management (CAM) found that new registrations of BEVs and PHEVs increased strongly in Europe and China in the first quarter of 2021. China remains the largest electric market, just ahead of Europe. What is striking is the enormous increase in new PHEV registrations in Europe.

Renault plans to gear up EV sales to 65% by 2025

Renault CEO Luca de Meo set new targets for the electrification of the brand in Europe at the annual general meeting. In 2025, the share of electrified passenger cars should be 65 per cent. By 2030, the goal is a share of at least 90 per.

Ireland halves PHEV subsidies

The Irish government will adjust its purchase incentives for electric vehicles as of 1 July 2021. While pure electric cars will continue to be subsidised with 5,000 euros, the subsidy for plug-in hybrids will be halved from the current 5,000 to 2,500 euros.

China shows strong EV sales growth over Q1 2021

The first EV manufacturers from China published their sales figures for March and for the first quarter of the year. Unsurprisingly, the statistics from BYD, Nio and Xpeng show a strong increase in sales compared to the start of 2020, which was overshadowed by the beginning of the pandemic.

Mercedes-Benz Cars sold 59,000 electrified cars in Q1 2021

Daimler subsidiary Mercedes-Benz Cars sold around 59,000 electrified cars worldwide in Q1/2021, including more than 16,000 fully electric passenger cars. This corresponded to a share of around ten per cent of total sales; in Europe, the share of electric cars and plug-in hybrids in sales even exceeded 25 per cent.

UK to invest £30 million into battery technology

In order to support research into battery technology, the British government will support the BEV and FCEV supply chains with over £30 million of UK government funding. A total of 22 studies will receive a share of £9.4 million in order to research and develop different aspects of the EV battery economy.

Saint-Gobain electrifies fleet in the UK & Ireland

The British subsidiary of the French industrial group Saint-Gobain wants to convert its 3,000-plus company cars completely to electric and hybrid vehicles by the end of 2023. Saint-Gobain UK & Ireland has already included the first 100 VW ID.3 into the fleet.
