Smart has announced that the appointment of Wolfgang Ufer marks that the company is “focusing on continuity and a clear next step in its European development.” The company stated that Ufer has “built deep knowledge of the brand and its markets over many years,” referring to his role as the current Germany chief. He and Dirk Adelmann have worked closely together for five years. The successor to Ufer at the helm of Smart Germany will be announced “in due course.”

For Smart Germany and Smart Europe, a transition phase is now underway, as Dirk Adelmann has led the Europe organisation for the past seven years. “In the transition phase until end of February and beyond, the respective teams will intensify their close collaboration, also in exchange with the partner at Mercedes-Benz and the worldwide organization of smart,” the company stated.

Under Adelmann and Ufer, Smart launched the battery-electric models #1 and #3, and in 2025, the #5, the largest Smart model to date. However, Smart will soon be downsizing again: the upcoming Smart #2 is set to “play a key role in shaping the brand’s future positioning in Europe,” according to the announcement.

This transition will take place in Europe under the leadership of Wolfgang Ufer. “The smart Europe team has built an excellent foundation over the past six years,” said the current Germany chief. “I am looking forward to leading this strong team into our next phase of growth in Europe by leveraging our great products, distinctive brand, and dedicated network.”

Mandy Zhang, Global CMO and Chair of the Supervisory Board of Smart Europe, added: “In Wolfgang Ufer, we have appointed a leader who combines a full understanding of the smart business with market expertise and a clear vision for the continued success of the brand in Europe. I want to thank Dirk Adelmann for his significant contributions to smart over the years and wish him well in his next role.”
