Motorpoint announces UK rollout of EV battery testing tech

Generational, which specialises in EV battery health certification, is set to deploy its battery testing technology at 21 Motorpoint stores and two preparation centres. This will be used to certify Motorpoint's secondhand electric car stock.

A large retailer of secondhand and ‘nearly-new’ cars, Motorpoint stocks around 6000 vehicles at any given time and has 21 stores across the UK. All of these stores will now deploy Generational’s battery health testing tech as a means of providing increased battery transparency to customers.

In effect, Generational offers an OBD unit which can be plugged into an EV and then used to run a battery health test. A report is then provided including OEM state of health (SoH) data, OEM warranty tracking, and range estimates. Generational says it aims to ‘de-risk’ stock purchases of used EVs, and give customers third-party verified certificates as to the state of an EV’s battery health.

The company describes: “It securely analyses the vehicle’s data to determine its battery’s state of health, benchmarked against manufacturer standards and Generational’s comprehensive EV battery database. The results are displayed in an intuitive, customer-facing certificate – giving clear, verified information on the condition and expected performance of each vehicle’s battery.”

Already, Motorpoint has used the solution to test around 1500 used BEVs and plug-in hybrids, finding that its stock returned an average state of battery health of 96.6 percent – with 97 percent of its EV stock achieving a SoH above 90 percent. It says it will now only offer EVs with a battery health rating of ‘very good’ or higher to customers.

Curtis Ainsworth, Head of Preparation at Motorpoint, said: “With more motorists making the move to electric, we wanted to give car buyers the reassurance they’re looking for when opting for a battery-powered vehicle. Generational’s testing solution offers accurate, transparent and data-driven battery health information that’s easy for customers to understand – which ultimately helps them buy with confidence.”

Oliver Philpott, CEO of Generational, added: “The results speak for themselves; vehicles with verified battery health data are selling much faster on average. It’s proof that transparency empowers customers and drives stronger business performance, so we’re thrilled to see Motorpoint leading the way in making battery health data standard across the UK’s used EV market.”
